One Step Backward, Two Steps Forward

Okay...so in trying to go from Lubbock to Baltimore on Southwest...why did we have to go west? To Albuquerque? One of life's many mysteries.

By the way, my travels have been numerous, but productive, and so far (praise God!) no major illnesses along the way. AND...one more update...I bought a new car! Picture to come later, when I am home long enough to buy batteries for my camera. Blue MINI Cooper Clubman - way too cool!

Don't Bug Me!

Busy times! Lots of travel...many hours in "cheerleader mode" presenting home care topics to crowds ranging from 12 to 450! I'm praying for bug-free status. Please Lord, I know that you care about the smallest of creatures - but keep your viruses away from me! Amen.

If you only read one book this year...

Remarkable.

Life in the Fast Lane

One more word about cars? I am in the market. Have decided that Chrysler's days are numbered and elder-care is quite costly. Any suggestions for my next mode of transportation?

Here are my criteria. It must be "hot" - no old lady car for this Gamma. No SUV. I am spoiled to the convertible - but am definitely open to a sunroof instead.

And by the way, I am not made of money...contrary to recent opinions at two Chrysler service departments.

Good Grief!! Stop the insanity....

Picked up Chrysler from Odessa dealer on Monday - and for the second time in too few days paid over $1300 for repairs. Home on Thursday evening.

Friday morning, Bryan walks out the front door and says, "Did you know you have oil leaking out of your car?" I narrowly avoided a nervous breakdown on the spot!

Apparently, according to the Chrysler service manager, the Odessa repair tech did not tighten the bolts on the timing cover correctly. So they have stripped out, were cross-threaded, etc. Another $400 to repair...you may be thinking, "surely Odessa will stand behind their work?" I thought so too. Quick call this morning and was told, "Yes, we warranty our work...but only at this dealership." I said, "Well, I cannot drive it to you in this condition...so it will be repaired in my HOME TOWN; please discuss this with your service manager and I will be looking forward to further word from you."

Better Business Bureau? Speed dial to my attorney? Quick trip to the insane asylum?

It's a coin toss!

Enough is enough! I surrender!

Okay, so on Wednesday, June 17th, after a day at work in the Odessa office, Chrysler's water pump decided to blow up and she bled out all her water! Thankfully, the engine did not overheat and burn completely up. Yes, I did just get her out of the shop less than 2 weeks prior...frustrating!

Next morning, had car towed to the dealer and rented a car from Enterprise. Was told I could pick her up on Monday, the 29th. Finished up that week in Odessa with my new friend, the Kia Optima rental. Pretty good car...took me back to Odessa on Monday with no problems.

Tuesday, drive to Denton...Wednesday, workshop in Denton. TODAY, worked at Foundation Management office all day on several projects. My friend, Kathy, and I decide to try to catch a movie. Great plan!! Until I was pulling off of I35 and into the movie parking lot...and was rear-ended! A wreck in a rental car. So frustrating!!!!

The police officer did not write any tickets. Also frustrating. I'm going to bed early tonight...gotta get this black cloud off my head.

Thinking about getting a horse & buggy!!

Lessons from the Road

After getting out of ICU (for major repairs of her power steering something-or-other and her oil pressure thing-a-ma-jig) and immediately getting 4 new tires, my car - Chrysler - is testing her new-found (& very expensive) "health" as she & I are hitting the road almost every working day this month. Thank God for weekends - when I may actually be able to spend time at home.

The road between Lubbock and Odessa was yesterday's adventure. I am convinced that God specifically chose West Texas for my home - where the horizons invite in every direction and the highways are straight and not too heavily travelled. Yesterday, Chrysler and I set out at 5:30am (yes, there is actually oxygen to breathe at that horrid hour), spend the day with our friends at the Odessa Accolade Home Care location, drove back to Lubbock for Prairie Winds Chorus rehearsal, and hit the driveway at home about 10:30pm. When your commute to work is 2.5 hours - one way - God has alot to say. He reminded me through my Ipod and Chrysler's speakers that "When you're lost, you can look, and you will find me...time after time" ... "who would have thought that a Lamb could rescue the souls of men?" ... "if my God is with me, whom then shall I fear?" ... "I want to leave a legacy, how will they remember me?"

Eight hours of sleep. Wonderful. Pot of coffee. Blissful. Ready to hit the road again.

This morning, the sun slept behind some well-placed clouds as Chrysler and I set foot (& tires) toward Denton. Perfect weather to put the top down. Nothing between me and God's presents (& His presence, for that matter). Five hours on the road today...spent talking to myself and Whomever might be listening in, interested in my thoughts...rehearsing timing on tomorrow's new workshop...commenting on the beauty as Chrysler and I dropped off the caprock near Crosbyton and later crossed the lake at Runaway Bay (breathtaking every time)...praying for family, friends, and co-workers. Chrysler is a quiet, patient, and faithful friend.

Headed to bed now. Blessed. Tomorrow an expected audience of 90-plus. Stressful.

No travel until Thursday...Chrysler celebrated 150,000 miles on this journey...she deserves a rest.

New Clothes!

Well, "Asparagus Commotion" has a new outfit - hope you like it! It just felt appropriate to give my blog a whole new look. Change is good.

If you have been around me in the last few months, you know that my physical body has been undergoing a transformation. With the now-40-pound weight loss comes the opportunity to re-evaluate my current wardrobe, my habits, how I spend my "free time," etc. I have enjoyed being able to buy some smaller sizes (and looking forward to smaller still). Change is better.

Through the discipline of routine exercise (nothing too drastic, don't get excited!), I have found that walking with God has taken on a new, very literal meaning. As I continue to put one foot in front of the other around the neighborhood or at that mall, I tell Him the desires of my heart and He responds with the desires of His! Listening for His voice - in the rustle of the trees, the flutter & chatter of the birds, the faces of children - has opened wide the windows of my soul. You know, once you start paying attention to God's work here on earth, it's hard to miss it. Change is best.

Standing Ovation in Carnegie Hall?!?!

Life is crazy, my friends! Performing with my Sweet Adelines chorus on the stage at Carnegie Hall was beyond description. But even more overwhelming was the "group sing" with the 6 other choruses at the end - when the NY audience gave us a standing ovation after our 3 songs!

I guess I am officially a star now! It was truly a feeling that I will never forget.

BTW, if you have not ever seen a Broadway show...you just need to start saving your pennies right NOW and make it a priority to do that before you die. I saw "Wicked" & am still emotional thinking about it, particularly the haunting lyrics of the song "For Good."

"Lion King," "Phantom of the Opera," "Jersey Boys," and "West Side Story" are all calling my name...I will be going back. Wanna join me?

Master Follies 2009 - mixed feelings

Our family attended MF last night at LCU. As always, homecoming is a great time to see old friends and get updated on all the events since last year.

This was Bryna's first time to attend Master Follies and at age 7 months, I will say she did fairly well. She enjoyed all the lights & music and the big screen images...but all the alumni screaming before and after each club show tipped her right over the edge. Crawdad took her to the back and she fell asleep and took a little nap in the midst of the bedlam! That reminded me of her mom & auntie H who would bring their favorite quilts with them to the show and just go to sleep on the floor under their seats!! The Crawford women play hard and when they hit a wall...they do the coma.

Her favorite part was at the end of the show while the band played and all the clubs danced awaiting the results...but I think it was the mirror ball that captured her heart! Maybe she'll need one in her room...LOL!

The hosts and hostesses are all extremely talented and looked like they were really enjoying themselves on stage. BUT THE BAND!!! Oh my word, they were beyond description....suffice to say, if you missed it...well, you missed something really fabulous. In my humble-but-not-always-impartial opinion, they stole the show. At New Year's, when the family was over at our house for "Rogers Family Christmas," Byron was working on the score for several of the songs...so I had a sneak preview! My little brother is a very talented arranger - that's all I have to say on that subject.

Congratulations to Koinonia and CD"s for taking first place! And again to Koinonia for Special Effects! AND again to Koinonia for People's Choice! CD's roadkill theme made this old purple heart laugh out loud...and Michelle McDonald...girl, you kicked you-know-what with your dance moves! Koinonia's "marching band going to a battle of the bands contest" was very well done in every detail...congrats Jacob Parnell for writing and directing this show-stopper!

I enjoyed all the clubs - and was able to see their unique personalities and traditions - which is always fun. But...and here comes the only negative...I'm not a big fan of the recorded music! Especially when you try to sing your (probably) very funny lyrics along with them...these old ears missed a LOT of what you worked so hard on! Save the recorded music for the (hopefully short) "speed drill/dance" section of your routine. I am one alumni who is a sucker for the clever use of familiar music with revised lyrics! Can we have more of that next year?!

Latest Weekend Project

This is the (almost free) mobile home that we moved onto our property last month. Bryan is spending every spare moment working on the renovation. Jennifer & Bryna hope to take residency of this 2 bedroom, 2 bath home later this year...hopefully by summer.

Keep in mind the story of the "ugly duckling" - this place has great potential!!

New Year's Resolution - one month late?

Well, I'm back...kinda forgot I even had a blog these past several months! 2008 was a year full of great challenges and greater blessings. Among my blessed events - I have a new daughter-in-law and my first grand-daughter! Both beautiful additions to the Crawford clan, believe me.

Friends, let me know what God is doing in and through your life in 2009. Looking forward to hearing from you. I resolve/promise to frequently update you through this blog and/or my Facebook.

FYI - second grand-daughter due to arrive in a few short weeks!!! Look back for pics soon - addition of a mobile home to our land, family pics, etc.

World's Worst Blogger!

Okay, I admit it. My life has been WAY too busy lately...what else is new?

Adam & Rachel's wedding was absolutely beautiful (pictures are pending)! It is so exciting to have a new daughter - can't wait to see what God has in store for this new family.

Heather & Josh are very busy with work, friends, hobbies, etc. Health issues in the Haynes extended family added stress - but currently, it looks as if things have settled down. Heather is going to be an aunt twice very soon! Her sister-in-law is soon to deliver a baby girl ... and ...

Jennifer is due any day now! I am going to be the coolest grandmother, wouldn't you agree??

Mark your calendars! May 10, 2008

Exciting news, friends! Adam & Rachel are engaged! He asked last Friday and she said "yes" - we are so excited! May 10 in Austin...more details as I hear them.

Living Out of Boxes

We moved in Labor Day weekend! And a word to the wise - moving is dangerous, do not do it any more often than is absolutely necessary. I fell first thing - sprained my ankle - laced a brace on & kept moving all day. Trip to ER that night and MRI the next Wednesday...they tell me I have torn a ligament in my ankle. So now, I am clumping around on my delicious hardwood floors wearing a lovely black boot! Bryan tells me it sounds like he's living with a pirate! Clump, step, Clump, step! I just need an eye patch and then train the peachick to sit on my shoulder and mimic me! Gradually, we are getting all the boxes unpacked, hooking up appliances, etc - and creating a list of all the touch-up items. Here are some updated pics. Let me know what you think - and very soon I will be unpacked (please Lord!) and I want you to come visit us!!
Linly, my sister-in-law, deserves an award!! Sunday afternoon, she singlehandedly scraped multiple layers of sticky shelf paper out of my kitchen cabinets...then (to her eternal credit) decided to polyurethane the cabinets and drawers! Wow!! They are so much better now!
Dining area - new area rug and new lighting. Love this.
The living room was the only room that escaped the overwhelming box-stacking activity.
Shot of Katie exploring the new master closet. (Since this pic was taken, I have added a LOT of baskets, wire shelves, and other organizers - this is the best closet I have ever had & to think it used to house a shower and a water heater at one end of a very long & very odd bathroom).
Good shot of my new master bath's basin sink, mirror, etc. Love this room!

My Floors Kick Butt!!

Can you believe how beautiful these hardwoods are!!! I am so excited. The living room walls are a beautiful gold color (called Brittlebush for some reason) - not going to miss the pinky-red. Bedroom #1 (above) also has Brittlebush walls (painted paneling). This floor had a LOT of water damage - it is sheerly amazing now.
This is a close-up of the tile - they are ceramic, but look like aged & worn saltillo. Below is in the master bath. We will have this tile in both baths, both hallways, mud room, and the sunroom. Hardwoods in living/dining/kitchen, bedroom 1& 2; Laminate in Bedroom 3 and master.
Pre-grout in the sunroom (also can be seen in the first picture of this post). This tile and the paint selections were chosen to enhance the Southwest feel and look of the property. We're getting closer!

LemonAid (The Never-Ending Story)

Too long between posts - I know! My life has been on auto-play lately, just one ongoing loop...but tonight, I have carved out a few minutes to myself (after a 5 hour drive from Lubbock to Denton for meetings the rest of the week). Here is a great picture (taken from inside the living room) of the peahen and her peachick! They are so interesting to watch - God's sense of humor incarnate! These two birds and one male are the only fowl still living. The story of Rufus and 2 other peafowl (one male & one female) is too sad for the written word - ask me in person some time!
Check this out! This new doggy door works with a magnet that Katie will wear on her collar. When she approaches, the mechanism will allow her to enter the house (but unless I issue a magnet to the peachick or one of the cats, no other animals will come in - at least not through this door). And yes, that IS a Whataburger cup in the hole left where the dryer vent was! Gotta love American ingenuity!
Bryan and Mike texturing the living room walls (along with every other wall in the house). In case you are interested, the name of the texture style is "Spanish drag" - LOL, conjures up an image, huh?!?
Who is that masked man? Mike is obviously spraying some noxious substance - or is expecting an attack from a bioterrorist. The masked man's wife, Sara - standing in my newly-painted master bedroom. I love these green walls!
We decided to lay laminate in the two bedrooms that did not already have hardwood floors (above is the master, Bedroom #3 also has this beautiful laminate). Making real progress is a good thing! This is the hallway from the dining room toward the master bedroom. Very cool light from IKEA - looks like a great place to hang pictures, huh?
Bryan is sanding the floor around the kitchen cabinets - that which does not kill us makes us stronger! Please note the absence of the gaping hole through which I so gracefully fell!!Huge sanding job! Nasty black stuff stinks really bad - Mike & Bryan almost died during this part of the process. This hole is in my master closet - before the remodel, it was part of the master bath and contained the drain from the shower. This is a close-up of a baby tree - isn't it amazing how nature longs for light!

Asparagus Commotion - what's in a name?

When I started my blog, I really wanted an unusual name - something that would reveal my creative side & reflect a bit of my nature. You may recall that I challenged my readers several posts ago to guess why I have entitled it "Asparagus Commotion" and only 2 people have ventured a guess. Well, that's fine & dandy - because I am pretty sure that my reasoning is quite obtuse! If you look up the meaning of my name, "Rhonda" is of old Welsh origin and most authorities state that it has 2 possible meanings:

1. "good spear" - from the Welsh "rhon" - meaning "spear"; and "da" - meaning "good."
2. "noisy one" - from the Rhondda River, a river in Wales, whose name means "noisy."

Thus - Asparagus Commotion is two variations of Rhonda. I am quite sure that my version of spear is not what the Welsh had in mind - and some of you asparagus-haters would argue, but I personally love this name! Want one more interesting, albeit useless, tidbit of information? Well, my maiden name, Rogers, according to some sources means "famous spear" - we must be a family of warriors!

Your friend,
GoodSpear FamousSpear

CHAOS @ contest

CHAOS - Amy, Heather, Jennifer, and Sarah before the quartet meeting and walk-on. (The camera obviously was nervous or excited!)
Can you keep my secret?!? Photography is actually prohibited during competition. I really thought the rule just applied to FLASH photography...so I set my camera to Auto, turned the flash off, and discreetly broke the rules! The black blob is the back of the head of the man in front of me. Our girls are singing their ballad "Broken-hearted" in this pic! Don't they look great?
Beautiful girls waiting for the judges results! CHAOS ranked 16th in this, their very first, contest...and are now preparing for our regional contest in April 2008. Debbie and I are very proud of these girls; thrilled to be at the beginning of a very exciting journey as they grow in their skills.

CHAOS in San Antonio

Heather, Jennifer, and I drove to Amarillo (Wednesday 7/11) to fly to San Antonio for their quartet competition. Yes, Lubbock still has an airport...it's a long story, but we needed my car in Amarillo on Saturday (for my nephew Kime's wedding in Panhandle)...here we are in the airport at Amarillo waiting for our plane...delayed, of course!
Sister sharing and multi-tasking! They are quite talented girls.
We drove to Castroville on Thursday to eat at Lumpy's. Our friend, Sydney, now lives there with her husband and she works at this BBQ joint. Sara & Jenn are dressing Sydney up (she looks thrilled, huh?)
Jenn & Syd doing the tango! Good friends & good food!
Debbie is listening to her peppermint patty. It's scary, isn't it? This is the president of our chorus!! :)

Crawford's Critters

Katie, my Schnauzer, had a recent eye injury and is on antibiotic drops and atropine ointment. The vet shaved her eyebrows off & she immediately reminded me of the cat in Shrek (all bug-eyed, kinda pitiful, and really cute). We have tons of stickers & thorns on the farm in Amherst and she kept trying to scratch her eyes with her "stickery paws". SO...I had a wild moment and got out the clippers. Here is the poor thing - resembling a POW! But she does seem to be cooler now! Someone needs to turn me in to the SPCA, I am just sure.
The next picture is one of the 2 peahens we inherited running around the new property. And here she is again followed closely by her peachick! Too cute.
The critters in the next pic are NOT quite so cute as those prior. Here's the one area where we have uncovered termites! They went into hiding when they saw me coming with my camera. We are having the property treated next weekend. Don't ever ask yourself "what else can happen?" Our God has a seriously obtuse sense of humor!

No Ifs, Ands, or...

Butts!! LOL - I crack myself up! Here's Mike and Blair (his son). Probably not their best sides, they are busy building a box in the master bath for my new jacuzzi tub...

The wood siding on the wall in this room used to be the exterior of the "old" part of the house (the 1938 section; at some point, the west half of the house was added on). I love the weathered wood look and plan to integrate it into the style of this bathroom. No telling just how many hours of work I will have to put in making this old weathered siding look like old weathered siding!!

LemonAid, continued

Here are some more recent pictures of the remodel project. Mike is putting in a million hours a week - and Bryan joins in between and after landscape jobs. We appear to be finished with the demolishment phase & I see major improvements daily! It's overwhelming, but very exciting!
Mike - hard at work - cutting one of thousands of boards in this project - in his "workshop" aka the living room...(we were not having an earthquake when I took this picture - I just am not a very good digital camera user!)
This is my new pocket door - in what will be the master closet. It might not look very exciting in this picture - but trust me, pocket doors are mysterious creatures :)
Bryan's attic ladder - a new install in the ceiling of the mud room...
I am not planning on going up there any time soon!! Bryan doesn't look to be having too much fun judging from the look on his face - it's hot under that metal roof!!

What's With the Name?! Curious?

Okay, anyone wondering why my blog is named "Asparagus Commotion"?? Comment with your guesses...I will reveal the mystery at a later date!

Art Appreciation

Okay, I'm more Picasso than Rembrandt, Van Gogh, or even Warhol! But I am sure the discerning art connoisseur will appreciate the subtleties of this piece. I am calling it "Fallen Woman."

You Gotta Break a Lot of Eggs...

We're not making omelets, but that famous word picture speaks when talking about remodeling an old house! It's going to look really bad before it starts looking better. Bryan and his crew pulled out all the old carpet & other floor coverings - only to reveal significant damage to the existing hardwood floors in the front of the house. These pictures (taken 6/27/07) show major areas of floor that have been removed due to damage OR to reveal the floor joists so that the house can be made more level OR to move and/or place new water & sewer lines in the bath/mudroom areas. The dining/kitchen area required temporary removal of a significant amount of flooring. Mike did excellent work here to level the floor...every floor joist here required adjustment! While he had so much floor out, he & Bryan decided to replace all the water lines - I'm going to have a brand new home disguised as an old house.
The floor in bedroom #1 had significant water damage along the east side. This blue is old paper backing left from removal of linoleum tiles.
This is the gutted guest bath! First picture is where the tub was (you can see into the hallway through the wall). The second is where the old sink cabinet once stood. The floor and sheetrock in this room had long-term water damage from old leaky pipes.
Hallway to master bedroom - seen from opposite side in bathroom picture above.
Master bath with all fixtures and some flooring removed - new water & sewer lines will need to be placed in this area, too. Blurry picture of new mud room area. Note portion of wall (where H2O heater was) has been removed as well as portion of wall into master bedroom. The washer/dryer will be on the left in this area with new cabinets above. (This picture and those below were taken 7/1/07)
Mud room (left) and hallway (right) as seen from master bedroom. New wall with mudroom door yet to be constructed.

This is the wall between master bedroom and master bath. The door into bathroom has been moved (hello Katie!). You can also see the frame for the new pocket door from bathroom into closet (the ladder is sitting in the new closet area). This is Rufus. He's a black silkie bantam chicken (I know, if he's a "he" maybe it's "rooster", does it really matter?). We inherited him along with at least 5 other birds (2 peacocks, 2 peahens, and a new "peachick"). I don't really know how to have birds, but guess we'll learn. Rufus is staying with the neighbor right now, so he won't starve to death...I have recently seen him running around in our yard a couple of times. Bryan says Rufus and one of the peacocks was on the front porch looking in through the glass doors the other day - I can only imagine what they were thinking about all this commotion going on! SO....do you think it looks bad? Kinda scary? Consider this. Have you ever seen a post-surgical face lift patient? Lots of bruising & swelling that resolves over a period of several weeks. Then - voila! Beauty!

LemonAid

Our new property was previously owned by a very nice woman named Lemon...consequently, we are calling the remodel project "LemonAid" - here are a few pictures of the house & property.
Front yard, carport, porch & entry doors. Mike & Sara Fowler were with us this day (6/9/07) to scope out & plan the extent of repairs & remodel work. We have contracted Mike to do the job - I am sure he'll show up in future pictures.
This is a view from inside the sunroom. There is blue/gray carpet throughout the house that we will be removing to expose hard wood oak floors (except in the hallways, baths, & mudroom where we are putting large saltillo-like tiles).
View of kitchen from dining room. I love the stained wood cabinets - SO glad prior owners didn't paint!
View of living room from the dining area. Nice wood underneath carpet! Great potential.
Looking back from the red wall in previous picture toward dining area. Hallway seen on left leads to master bedroom. Hallway on right shows back door.
These windows are absolutely beautiful & are in place throughout the house.
This is guest bath. The plumbing in this room as leaked over the years leaving significant damage to the floors. We will be gutting this room down to the studs & replace the plumbing, flooring, bathtub, toilet...well, everything but the mirror is going!
Utility room. The washer/dryer sat behind this (the back) door and under a window. We are knocking out a wall & incorporating the small closet in the master to make a larger mud room. H2O heater will go into a small closet across the room and the washer/dryer will sit in the enlarged area where water heater now sits.
Master bath. South end of a long, narrow room. This double sink is going into the guest bath. We're repurposing this space to make a smaller bath & a walk-in closet.
North end of master bath has a stall shower. In the remodel, this area will be closet.
Yard outside back door.
Facing driveway, vine-covered stucco wall defines "back" yard - the northern part of the property.
Side gate (off carport) into back yard. Very cool tree back there with knobby, knarled trunk (weeping mulberry? or something like that).
This is off the carport (porch barely seen at left). We have lots of trees and greenery! We've had significant rainfall this year - everything is overgrown and in desperate need of a landscape/irrigation professional!

Oreos Gone Bad

Lunch with my grandmother (Baba Rogers) at her house was always tuna salad sandwiches, fritos and oreos for dessert. I love all 3 of those delicacies!! Although, I must admit, they are probably part of the reason for my girth to this date...oh well. When I was a little girl, the cookie part was crisper and better tasting. These were the days before we knew how bad "real" food was for us - like butter & lard - yes, lard (I know, gross)! Now they use trans fats and/or some other poor substitute for real fat and consequently, the cookies just don't taste all that good. For that matter, the white stuff has also changed over these 40+ years for some of the same reasons. At any rate, it was true then and remains true now that the middle of the Oreo is the best part. Why am I droning on about Oreos? Well, my life right now is an ongoing analogy to our dear sandwich cookie...but all gone wrong...the Oreo from the "hot" place! Sandwiched between two VERY expensive repairs to my car (less than a week apart) is a bone-rattling/arm-wrenching personal injury. Yes, on Wednesday, 6/27, after turning my car in for repairs (oil & transmission fluid leaks), I fell between two floor joists at the house slamming my back into one of the beams, whiplashing my neck, and doing something interesting to my left shoulder & arm. I was just beginning to think the pain is actually getting better (with frequent trips to my chiropractor). BUT yesterday, 7/5, the car had to go back to the shop (for brake issues this time). To top it all all off, I had to take my dog to the vet for a serious injury to her eye - she's on antibiotic & atropine eye meds now! When it rains, it pours?! So, if someone would just please twist this cookie apart & scrape out all the "good" part and throw away the "bad", I'd be grateful!!

Teaser ;)

Posting digital pictures this weekend taken before and during the very first phases of remodel (which looks remarkably like tearing the house DOWN)! Apparently, all the commotion on my glob (blog to all you traditionalists) is going to focus on the new house for the unforeseen future...if that does not interest you, sorry 'bout your luck!

The Big Picture (continued)

The remodel floorplan (see post below for original):
The green areas are mechanical closets (for Heating/AC and H2O heater)
Planned Changes:
1. We are knocking out the wall that separated the original mudroom from the original master closet.
2. That makes space to move the water heater to its new location and the Washer/Dryer from under the windows by the back door and into the newly enlargened area on the east wall of the mudroom.
3. We will have a door from the mud room into the master bedroom. Makes lots of sense for the licensed irrigator in the family - drop off the muddy shoes by the door, strip & start the washer! Clean clothes and houseshoes just a few steps away...what could be better?
4. The other change requiring wall-knocking-down activity is the master bath. I opted for a smaller bath area and we're creating a 6'x6' walk-in closet in the north end of the old master bath. The old bath was a very long, narrow room with no tub. Former owners had a shower on the north end, toilet on the south end and a two-sink vanity.
5. We are moving the two-sink vanity into the guest bath. (We gutted the guest bath)
6. The master bath will have a whirlpool tub, toilet, and a pedestal sink in the south half of the room & the closet in the north half - a new wall with pocket door will separate.

The Big Picture

Get out your magnifying glass (or bifocals, my dear peers)...this is the original floorplan.
Entry/sunroom = bright yellow
Kitchen/Dining/Living Room (plus halls & mud room) = gray
Master bedroom & bath=pink & turquoise
Guest bath = orange
Bedroom #1 = pale yellow
Bedroom #2 (office) = blue
Bedroom #3 = purple

Correction:

In the MSN aerial view, the NSEW button repositions the view so that you are looking in that direction, not from that direction. Wouldn't want y'all to be confused! Can't have that.

Our New House!

After 2 years on the farm in Lamb county, we decided to move back into Lubbock county. I have really loved the country life - do you know how bright the stars are when they don't have to compete with halogen? But so much of our routine occurs in the "big" city and that 45 minute one-way trip has simply worn me down! Our "house hunt" story is too long (and probably too boring) for this site...but suffice to say, the internet is a wonderful tool!! We found a property that met all my criteria - older home, acreage, trees, and a good price! All the financial pieces fell into place - many thanks to our banker at American State Bank in Littlefield - and before I knew it, the ink was on the paper. Done deal.

Our new house sits on about 1 1/2 acres, has 2000 sf in 4 bedroom & 2 bath. It was built in 1938 and is in need of some repair (damaged flooring), updating (bathrooms), remodel (mudroom and master bath & closet). I am very excited about this move & can't wait to see the finished product!! If you are interested, check in frequently for progress reports.

This link is to pretty good aerial view of our new property (pics taken in 2005, I think). The N,S,E,W button on the left will show the view from that direction. Check it out!

Summer 2007

Welcome to my "blog"...that's such a weird word! Reminds me of "glob" - a lump of some substance. Perhaps "glob" better describes what you will find here - lumps of random thoughts, pictures, the occasional rant (I'm quite sure). Thanks for checkin' in!
